New Hampshire Arts Journal coming your way
The New Hampshire Arts Journal, a new print magazine from the N.H. State Council on the Arts, is on its way to subscribers. The Arts Journal replaces New Hampshire Arts News, the Arts Council’s print newsletter, and it has a broader purpose: to connect artists, arts organizations, and art supporters in New Hampshire; to provide a venue for creative work by artists and writers affiliated with the Council; to go beyond reports on programs supported by Arts Council funding to explore, in a larger sense, why those programs matter. The goal is to provide a lively, readable, and relevant publication that readers will want to keep on their shelves. You’ll find features stories, profiles, historical pieces, essays, and behind-the-scenes sketches on topics that relate to the Arts Council and its mission.

The launch of the Journal is a timely one. With cuts in state funding and potentially more cuts in the future, the new magazine will provide a new way to serve and promote New Hampshire’s arts community that doesn’t involve targeted grants. And in these days of instantaneous transmission of news, the Arts Council has already shifted to an e-news format to get out the kind of information that, in the past, would have been sent out only four times a year via the print New Hampshire Arts News.

AANNH Welcomes New Assistant Director
The Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire has appointed Eileen Alexander of Whitefield to the post of assistant director. Alexander begins her job on September 1. Her duties will include communications and development of the AANNH volunteer network. She was most recently the editor of the Coös County Democrat, based in Lancaster, and the Berlin Reporter. Prior to that she was a reporter for the Democrat from 1990 to 2001. She has lived in Whitefield since 1978, and serves as a trustee of the Whitefield Public Library. She is also a mosaic artist, actor, and freelance writer with a long commitment to the arts in northern New Hampshire. "I am thrilled to assume this new position," she says, "and to have the opportunity to advance the cause of arts and culture in the region. I look forward to working with all of the people and organizations who dedicate so much time and energy to make this possible."

Obituaries

Carleen Hutchins
Carleen Hutchins, a 98-year-old violin maker who used science to help come up with the right acoustics for her instruments, died August 7, 2009, at her home in Wolfeboro, N.H. It was said that her violins came closer than any other violin-makers to replicating the Stradivarius sound. Read her obituary in the Concord Monitor –

Memorial Service for James Whitmore
A memorial service for James Whitmore will be held Sunday, August 23, 2009, at 8 p.m. at the Peterborough Players Theatre, to celebrate and commemorate Whitmore’s life.

The general public is invited to come together at the theater to celebrate Whitmore’s career, the time he spent at the Peterborough Players, and what he meant to the extended community. Family and friends will share recollections, and video montages will be shown.

The noted actor James Whitmore died in his home in February 2009 of lung cancer at the age of 87. His family continues to carry out the love of theatre, and particularly of the Peterborough Players: James Whitmore, Jr., is in Heartbreak House and Whitmore’s granddaughter, Aliah, is stage manager for the Second Company for the 2009 season.
